A Surrey high school is getting additional space built adjacent to its existing site, scheduled to open in 2027.

At the school board’s regular monthly meeting on Nov. 8, the architect assigned to a project at Tamanawis Secondary provided an update of the plan.

“Our approach, like we approach all of our additions, is to really relate to the architectural style of the existing building,” said architect Mark Ehman from DA Architects + Planners.

Once complete, the total capacity for the school would increase by 575 students, to a maximum of 1,700 with the three-storey addition.

Additional parking would also be available after construction, as the six portables currently on-site will no longer be needed.

The existing weight room would also be demolished during the process.

On the three floors of the additional space will be childcare spaces for 37 children, classrooms, including an art studio and a foods room, a new theatre, a small gymnasium, gender-neutral and accessible washrooms and special education learning areas, according to Ehman’s design.

While still in the design-development stage, construction for the site is expected to begin in September, 2025 with a hopeful completion by August 2027 ready for students to use the space the following September.
