Over the next five months, only Surrey residents can drop off junk for free at the city’s two waste centres.
From May 1 to Sept. 25, each household gets one chance to take advantage of the free drop-off service at the Central Surrey and North Surrey recycling and waste centres, both operated by Metro Vancouver.
Restrictions include proof of Surrey residency, loads of 100 kilograms or less and up to four mattresses. The free drop-off promo is not extended to commercial and business vehicles. Visit surrey.ca/wastecentres for details.
The initiative aims to help Surrey in its battle against illegal dumping.
“With two full-service recycling and waste facilities, along with the Large Item Pickup Program, there is no excuse for illegal dumping in Surrey,” says a news release from city hall.
Some recyclables, including electronics, metals, appliances, books and clothing, can be dropped off for free at any time at the two waste centres, in Newton (6711 154 St.) and Port Kells (9770 192 St.).
The facility in Newton opened in 2022 with goals to reduce illegal dumping and travel times. Located in East Newton, the $40-million centre is designed for smaller vehicles – cars, pickups and vans – driven by residents of the region and small business operators. Anyone can bring stuff to the site, not only Surrey residents.
Open seven days a week, 363 days a year, the facility accepts materials beyond those in Surrey’s curbside collection program.
